ROME — At around 2 p.m. Wednesday, Julius Caesar, leader of the Roman Republic, was stabbed to death by two men at a location adjacent to the Theater of Pompey.

The two men involved have been identified as Gaius Cassius Longinus and Marcus Junius Brutus. Longinus was a philosopher at Rhodes, and Brutus was a politician and a military commander, both in support of the conspiracy against Caesar. Longinus had planned the ambush on Caesar that led to the assassination.

Conflicts have existed between Caesar and the citizens of Rome, including fears of his growing power. Several Roman senators had voiced their concerns on the possibility of Caesar overthrowing the government system by seizing too much power. Such concerns have led many to believe that this is what led to the assassination of Caesar.

He had also been recently declared dictator perpetuo, or “dictator for life,” by the senate.
